The Moonlight Men of Baseball

Jon Daniels

The movie, Field of Dreams, celebrated its 30th anniversary this year. As part of the celebration, I attended a Chicago White Sox game after which the movie was shown on the centerfield scoreboard. The main baseball player featured in the movie is Shoeless Joe Jackson, well known member of the infamous 1919 Chicago White Sox.

Pigeon Therapy

Jon Daniels

Over the summer, Chicago Alderman Gilbert Villegas drew the ire of animal activists by proposing an ordinance that would sanction pigeon racing in Chicago. As outlandish as that may sound to some people, it is a popular sport in some parts of Europe, particularly in Poland, enjoyed by both trainers and spectators. The racing is based on the homing skills that these birds possess. Whether racing or not, pigeons seem to stir up controversy among urbanites and this proposed ordinance was no exception. My initial reaction was to think about how my view on pigeons has evolved through the years.

2019 Charlotte Baseball Trip

Jon Daniels

In 1991, a group of my SABR friends and I decided to share a weekend of minor league baseball each year. We named our group the Universal Baseball Association (UBA) after the famous BB Novel by Robert Coover. We have attended games in over 40 minor league cities. This year we decided to meet in Charlotte, home of the Chicago White Sox AAA affiliate the Charlotte Knights.

2019 Opening Day in Milwaukee

Jon Daniels

As soon as the 2019 MLB schedule came out, I looked to see who the Brewers were playing in their home opener. Boy, did I get lucky! For the 2nd year in a row, the Brewers were opening against the Cardinals a week before there would be any baseball in Chicago. Better yet, the 2019 series would be 4 games as opposed to the 3 game series in 2018. Another plus in Milwaukee: the roof at Miller Park (see below) is retractable, thereby removing the possibility of a rain (snow) out.

Hallmark Christmas Movie Report

Jon Daniels

Back in the 60’s my family had a tradition of going to the movies on Christmas Day. We did not necessarily go to see Holiday movies. In fact, we saw James Bond 3 years in a row. The landscape in terms of holiday films has changed drastically since then and is now populated with films from Cable TV and streaming. In addition to theatrical releases. most holiday films now come by way of the Hallmark channels, the Lifetime channel and Netflix. Due to increase viewership, these channels and Netflix have upped their reindeer game.

2019 Trip to Italy

Jon Daniels

In January 2019, I was made an offer I could not refuse. I had told good friend Brett Pontoni many times I had one country in Europe I wanted to visit and that was Italy. Apparently, Brett got tired of me making this request because soon after the Holidays, he adamantly told me to get a passport, block out some time in April and get ready to go. What follows are the details of a 7-day trip to Italy I will never forget.

Grapefruit League Report - 2019

Jon Daniels

In early March I spent 10 days on Florida’s Gulf Coast going to 9 baseball games featuring 8 teams in 6 parks. The sunny weather was warm with temps in the mid 80’s. Most of the time was spent at my timeshare on Siesta Key in south Sarasota. The last 3 days I stayed in Dunedin at the Fenway Hotel.
