It’s the Season of the Dog! In Season 5, dabroze will feature a “Dog Story of the Week” in the follow-ups. This week, two movies are the subject of very enthusiastic reviews: The Upside with Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston, and The Drop with Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace, and the late James Gandolfini in his last performance. Also, new Season of the Dog t-shirts and coffee mugs are now available!
The Dog Story of the Week is about Bunny, a severely disabled dog with deformed legs, a curved spine, and crossed eyes. The Chicago shelter, Felines and Canines put Bunny’s story in a Facebook post asking for donations for a medical fund. They surpassed their $10,000 goal in the first six hours. They don’t just leave their animals to die or be put to sleep. They fix them.
Jon is understandably thrilled as he recounts the victory of his St Louis Blues in Game 5 of the NHL’s Stanley Cup playoffs. They are now 3-2, ahead of the Boston Bruins. As he’s said before, it’s been 49 years since they played for the cup, and it was against Boston.
The Upside is about a quadriplegic man (Bryan Cranston) who is ready to give up on life, and a paroled ex-con (Kevin Hart) who is trying to reconnect with his estranged wife and son, and who needs a job. He stumbles into a job he doesn’t really want, as a caregiver to a quadriplegic man who wants to die. They discover they have a chemistry which leads to a mutually beneficial relationship. There is that extra plus for Jeri: catheter humor.
The Drop follows bartender Bob (Tom Hardy) who works at Cousin Marv’s (Marv played by James Gandolfini). This is a bar used by local mobsters as a drop place for their ill-gotten loot. Bob finds a battered puppy in a garbage can, and asks his neighbor (Noomi Rapace) to help him nurse it back to health. From that, a relationship develops. One reviewer praises Tom Hardy’s “surprising switch from lovable dumb ox to cannier-than-we-thought.”
The boys have so much fun talking about dogs, sports and their favorite movies, we can’t help but have fun listening to them.
