The Israel National Baseball Team qualifies for the 2020 Olympics! The Dog Story is about Spot, the internet’s 4-legged Robot Dog. Follow-ups include a 15 year-old high school drummer whose video went viral, and a mascot-like doll named “The Mensch on a Bench.”
Jeri announces that Boston Dynamics is now leasing, not selling, Spot the Robot Dog. It can be equipped with a camera, so there are a lot of good uses… surveillance, scanning infrastructure, or helping an invalid. Jeri sees this technology being useful as limb replacements for paraplegics and quadriplegics in the future. Jon suggested that Spot should be allowed in all dog parks because he doesn’t poop.
Jimmy Kimmel watched a viral video of high school drummer Dallen Johnson, and invited him on the show to play with his band. Jon originally thought “The Mensch on a Bench” was the mascot for the Israeli baseball team. After a closer look, he found that The Mensch is actually a stuffed toy, representing a role model for Israeli children. He tries to do the right thing, and inspires others to do the same.
Jon describes the history of the Israel National Baseball Team. Team Israel won the 2019 European Baseball Championship- B Pool in early July 2019. Then they won the best-of-three playoff series 2-0, thereby qualifying for the 2019 European Baseball Championship.
Because Team Israel finished in the top five in the 2019 European Baseball Championship, it earned the right to participate in the 2020 Olympics Qualifiers. That tournament took place in Italy between September 18 and 22, 2019. As the winner of that tournament Israel, for the first time, qualified to be one of the six national teams that will compete at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
In preparation to qualify to play baseball at the 2020 Summer Olympics, 10 American baseball players moved to Israel in 2018 in order to qualify in 2019 under the citizenship requirement. You have to be Jewish and have lived in the country for a year.
Wish it was that easy in the United States.
